With 89% of nurses reporting staffing shortages at their facilities, policymakers and the healthcare community must join forces to rebuild our nation’s nursing workforce. Unfortunately, a 2022 survey found that nursing schools turned away almost 92,000 qualified applications in 2021, largely due to a nurse faculty shortage that has grown to over 2,100 full-time faculty vacancies. The pay disparity between nursing school faculty and acute care nurses is cited as a leading reason why it is difficult to attract nurse faculty.

The Nurse Faculty Shortage Reduction Act (H.R. 7002/S. 2815) would address this pay disparity through the creation of a grant program administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration. This grant funding would be available to nursing schools that commit to supplementing nurse faculty salaries to bring them in line with the salaries of nurses in acute care settings.

By supporting the recruitment and retention of new nursing school educators, this bill takes a critical step towards filling essential nursing positions and addressing the healthcare workforce crisis.
