Legislative Update from Florida Nurse Practitioner Network

Legislative Update
Legislative Update Week #1
Start of Session.
This is an update from AANP, with whom the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network met recently while attending the AANP Health Policy Conference in Washington, DC. We are working collaboratively and staying on top of any new developments and will pass that on to our members.
Barrier Reduction Bills: Expanding Psychiatric NP Protocol Exemptions
- S.B. 758 and H.B. 883 as introduced, proposes extending the state’s existing limited exemptions for eligible psychiatric NPs to practice without a protocol after 3,000 supervised hours (F.S.A. § 464.0123).
- Status:
- S.B. 758: Introduced and awaiting further assignment.
- H.B. 883: Referred to the Health Professions & Programs Subcommittee, awaiting a hearing.
AANP continues to monitor barrier-reduction efforts like these and proactively seek opportunities to champion evidence-based approaches that would eliminate unnecessary restrictions for all NPs across all specialties and improve patient access to care.
Problematic Restrictions on Health Professional Titles and Credentials
SB 172 & HB1341 as introduced, would limit the use of common descriptors and titles and designations by health care providers who are not physicians, and would set new limitations on how all health care practitioners represent themselves and their credentials. A bill with similar language was vetoed by the governor in previous sessions due to concerns raised by the Florida health care community.
- Status:
- S.B. 172: Introduced and awaiting further assignment.
- H.B. 1341 : Referred to the Health Professions & Programs Subcommittee, awaiting a hearing.
It is always recommended you reach out to your Florida Legislators and share your thoughts on this pending legislation.
