2021 Florida Legislative Session Begins: APRN Bills
The 2021 Florida Legislative session has begun, and two important bills have been filed that could have a substantial impact on Advanced Practice Nursing in Florida!
In the Florida House Representative Maggard has filed House bill 111: Autonomous Practice by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. A companion bill, SB 424: Autonomous Practice by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse has been filed in the Florida Senate by Senator Jeff Brandes!
Both bills have identical language and would expand autonomous practice for APRNs in Florida. Under current statutes only Advanced Practice Nurses practicing in the primary care health care sector are allowed to apply for, and be licensed as an autonomous advanced practice nurse. (Autonomous Advanced Practice Nurses are allowed to practice without costly and unnecessary physician “supervision” requirements.)
The language of these bills would allow any APRN who meets requirements to apply for autonomous practice regardless of their area of practice. Only APRNs who meet requirements established by previous statute can apply for autonomous practice.
